The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations global agency responsible for the safety, security and prevention of marine pollution. The IMO measures cover all aspects of international shipping – including ship design, construction, equipment, manning, operation and disposal – to ensure that this vital sector remains safe, environmentally sound, energy efficient and secure.
The IMO currently has 176 Member Countries, 66 intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and 89 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier center of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity development. The current student body consist of representatives from 53 countries.
